Could You Have Metabolic Syndrome?

A topic that gets a lot of discussion among Kimkins dieters is "metabolic syndrome" -- and it doesn't have an absolute definition. People with metabolic syndrome tend to gain weight easily and have a harder time losing. If you have 3 or more of these factors your doctor may diagnose you with with Metabolic Syndrome:

  • Tummy Obesity: A waist measurement of 35" or more for women and 40" or more for men.
  • Low HDL Cholesterol: This is the "good" stuff that can protect against heart disease. Low HDL is <>
  • High Fasting Blood Glucose: Defined by a blood sugar level of 100+ after fasting (not eating) for 8-12 hours.
  • High Triglycerides: Considered borderline at 150 mg/dL and high at 200+ mg/dL.

If your health care provider diagnoses you with metabolic syndrome, the next step could be insulin resistance -- and that's the precursor to type 2 diabetes. How can you stop or reverse Metabolic Syndrome? With the same tools that help with insulin resistance or controlling type 2 diabetes! Read on ...

  • Get a Blood Glucose Test: Your health care provider can order testing or you can check yourself with a home blood glucose test. Read the package instructions, do the simple finger prick and get your results in a few seconds. Confirm your result with your doctor, particularly if elevated.
  • Don't Smoke: Associated with increased blood pressure, high triglycerides and metabolic syndrome. Just stop. Whether you try Nicorette, professional counseling, nicotine patches, hypnosis or lozenges, begin now to finally kick the cigarette addiction once and for all!
  • Cut Back on Drinking: Alcohol directly affects the liver -- AKA "metabolism central". Damage to your liver can result in high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, cholesterol and weight gain. A damaged liver cannot metabolize fat properly and weight control is much more difficult. PS - The extra calories in the alcohol aren't helping either.
  • Nail Down a Healthy Weight: A no brainer because you already knew this. Are you a procrastinator? Think you'll fail? Tried too many times and gave up? Welcome to the club! Don't beat yourself up. No dieter gets from start to finish without a few detours. Pick a weight loss program that fits your lifestyle and budget.
